Underground Tour
(206) 682-4646
June 6th, 1889 The Great Seattle Fire ripped through then Seattle's downtown, destroying sixty-six square blocks. After the fire, city planners wanted to raise the level of the streets in the area to alleviate some sewage issues with being built at the level of the tidal plain. Businesses in the area, fed up with waiting for the city, rebuilt anyway.

When the city finally raised the streets, sidewalks and building entrances sat up to 36 feet below the level of the street! Amazingly, it business as usual for a time, with pestrians scrambling up and down between street and businesses, but eventually building entrances were raised to meet the street, and the sidewalks covered over, creating the Seattle underground.

The guided tour begins at Doc Maynard's Pub and is loaded with interesting and entertaining bits of Seattle history. The tour is narrated throughout and written versions are available in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Italian, German, French, Spanish and Russian.

Frequent stairs and uneven surfaces prevent this tour from being handicapped accessible.
